Overloaded Truck, Overcrowded Bus Blamed for Chevella Tragedy: Police Investigation Underway

Hyderabad;Nov 03(PMI) Preliminary findings from the police investigation into the Chevella road tragedy, which claimed 21 lives, point to overloading of both the RTC bus and the gravel-laden truck as major contributing factors.

The accident occurred near Mirzaguda in Chevella, when an RTC bus from Tandur to Hyderabad collided head-on with a truck carrying gravel. Investigators revealed that the bus was carrying around 70 passengers, despite a permitted capacity of just 50, while the truck was overloaded with construction material.

Disturbing visuals from the crash site, including footage of a woman trapped beneath heaps of gravel, have sparked widespread shock and outrage.

Officials noted that beyond overloading, poor road conditions and regulatory lapses may also have played a role. Questions are being raised about whether the truck had valid clearance to operate on that route at that time, and why additional buses were not arranged to manage the heavy passenger rush.

The Chevella Police have registered a case and launched a detailed probe to determine accountability and prevent such mishaps in the future. (pressmediaofindia.com)
