Opposition continues to stall proceedings in Parliament over various issues

The Lok Sabha today gave its seal of approval to the Union Budget 2018-19 with the passage of the Finance Bill, 2018 and Appropriation Bills without discussion amidst upproar by the opposition.

The bills were passed through guillotine as the Congress-led opposition paralysed the functioning of the House for the eighth day.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley moved the Finance Bill 2018, reflecting taxation proposals as well as the Appropriation Bills outlining the spending in various departments.

The guillotine was applied for approval of all the outstanding demands for grants of various Ministries.

Earlier, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar had requested the Chair to take up the Finance Bill and Appropriation Bills immediately after Question Hour. He said, for last two weeks, the opposition has been continuously disrupting the proceedings of the House despite repeated appeals by the government that it is ready for holding a discussion on any issue.

Our Correspondent reports that with the passage of the Finance Bill and the Appropriation Bills, the budget exercise is completed in the lower house.

The functioning of both the Houses of Parliament has been stalled since the second half of the Budget session, which began on 5th of this month as opposition parties raised issues ranging from PNB fraud case, setting up of the Cauvery river water management board and special package to Andhra Pradesh.

The Rajya Sabha, which also witnessed repeated adjournments, was adjourned finally for the day at 2 PM.

Earlier, when the House re-assembled, a copy of the Finance Bill was tabled amidst noisy scenes by opposition parties.
