‘Only Trump knows where things stand’ with Iran: White House

09-04-2026

WASHINGTON: The White House has reiterated Trump’s demand that Iran reach a deal within the next seven hours, saying only the US president knows how he will respond if Tehran fails to comply.

“The Iranian regime has until 8pm Eastern Time (00:00 GMT) to meet the moment and make a deal with the United States,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told media.

“Only the president knows where things stand and what he will do.

Israeli military promises to ‘further degrade’ Iran’s government

Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir says the US and Israel’s “joint” war on Iran is approaching a “strategic junction” and pledges to inflict more damage on Iran’s government. “We are approaching a strategic junction in the joint operation against Iran,” Zamir was quoted by the Israeli military as saying.

“Thus far, we have achieved significant accomplishments, including in relation to the objectives we set at the outset of the operation. We will continue to act with determination and deepen the degradation of the regime.”

UAE ‘deeply regrets’ Security Council ‘failure’ to pass Hormuz draft resolution

The UAE’s mission to the UN has said it “deeply regrets” the council’s “failure” to “endorse a clear framework for international cooperation in ending Iran’s illegal attacks and threats to the global economy”.

“The Strait of Hormuz must remain open to all, and the freedom of navigation must be preserved. No country should have the power to shut down the arteries of global commerce and drive the world to the brink of economic calamity,” it said in a statement shared on social media.

“The Security Council’s failure to act does not diminish the urgency of this crisis or the UAE’s resolve,” it continued, adding that the UAE would continue to push for international efforts to secure navigation in the strait.

Iraqi group says US journalist Kittleson to be freed

We now have more information on Kataib Hezbollah’s statement that it will release kidnapped US journalist Shelly Kittleson.

In a statement, Abu Mujahid al-Assaf, a security official in the Iraqi armed group, said: “In recognition of the national stances of the outgoing prime minister, we have decided to release the American defendant Shelly Kittleson, on the condition that she leaves the country immediately.”

There was no immediate statement on the news from Iraq’s government, which previously said authorities at the highest level were searching for the journalist.

The political rhetoric in Israel is one of escalation

In the past two hours, we’ve seen warnings of three volleys of Iranian missiles, one in the south and two in the central area of Israel.

We’re hearing reports of perhaps an impact site in Petah Tikva, which is home to several military-industry factories, one of which was hit earlier this week.

The political rhetoric in Israel is that Donald Trump shouldn’t take what mediators are offering, because anything short of total decimation of Iran’s government, of creating the conditions to completely collapse this system, would be tantamount to defeat and the Israeli PM in particular has really tied his fate to this war.

So you do not hear words of the possibility of reaching a compromise. You hear the exact opposite, and that’s why we saw those reports of PM Netanyahu speaking to Trump, counselling him.

Strategists of Netanyahu’s Likud Party are even talking about scenarios that are far more violent than just the bombardment of the power grid.
