Hyderabad: A lawyer from Old City was arrested for allegedly harassing a 33-year-old woman on Tuesday. According to the police, the accused has been identified as Mirza Mauzam Baig (31), a resident of Khilwat locality in Hyderabad’s Old City.The police said Mauzam Baig befriended a woman, an event manager by profession, on Facebook and met her in person a few months ago. The woman lodged a complaint with the police alleging that the accused had been sexually harassing her ever since he met her.
In her complaint, the victim said that she being an event manager, had to attend several parties along with Baig. She also alleged that Baig had sent her obscene messages through his friends’ Facebook accounts. It is learnt that Baig has been working as youth congress leader.
Later, Baig attempted to tarnish her image by making false propaganda against her character. He had several times intimidated her and demanded her to quench his sexual thirst. She had spurned his advances and tried to avoid him. However, he began harassing her by making frequent calls to her from other numbers, the police said.
Baig had discussed her personal issues with his Jeeshal Ali Khan, Mehraj Patel and Mohammad Lukkhan and floated rumours about her. Baig had collected personal details of the woman and raised false propaganda against her on social networking sites.
With the help of his friend Sheik Ahmed Parvez, Baig used to frequently pass rumours to the victim’s husband, the police said. After not appearing before the police, he was arrested on Tuesday.
However, the accused alleged that he was thrashed by the police even though he had fallen sick due to ill-health and was admitted in hospital.
