New wave of Israeli attacks kill 72 across Lebanon

27-09-2024

BEIRUT: Israeli attacks killed 72 people across Lebanon on Wednesday, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health says, as the death toll from Israel’s bombings surpasses 620.

Some 500,000 people may now have been displaced by Israel’s massive bombing campaign across Lebanon, Lebanon’s foreign minister says.

France’s foreign minister tells the UN Security Council that it is working with the United States on a proposal for a 21-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

At least 41,495 people have been killed and 96,006 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. In Israel, the number killed in the Hamas-led attacks on October 7 is at least 1,139, while more than 200 people were taken captive.

A lot of unconfirmed reports about exactly what’s next when it comes to a diplomatic settlement. But it’s important to remember some of the conversations that defence and security officials have been having over the past several weeks.

When Yoav Gallant, the country’s defence minister, spoke to the US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, he said the time for a diplomatic settlement with Hezbollah had expired and that Israel is pursuing a more military type of procedure with a lot of force.

The United States says that it understands Israel’s de-escalation through escalation policy but this is something that is causing widespread concern.

The Israeli military has said “the boots of Israeli soldiers will be in enemy territory”. Indicating that perhaps a ground offensive is looming. Something that’s also causing a lot of concerns.

The Israeli Prime Minister said that all options are on the table. This is something that has been repeated by all of the Israeli officials who have been in a litany of meetings on Wednesday throughout the day.

So it’s still unclear exactly what a diplomatic settlement would look like or if that’s an option but in terms of securing the northern border with Lebanon, Israel said that they are going to change the balance of power in the north.

At least one person has been killed after Israeli fighter jets bombed the Kallab family home in the centre of Khan Younis city in southern Gaza, the Wafa news agency reports. Several more wounded people were transferred to the Nasser Medical Complex.

Wafa also reports the Israeli military has bombed a house in the customs police area east of Khan Younis, resulting in deaths and injuries, without specifying how many.

In the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, the Israeli military has bombed a home on al-Yafawiya Street, killing at least one person and injuring nine more, Wafa reports. Several people were also injured when Israeli forces bombed the al-Sahhar family home in Jabalia town.

We will bring you more information on these attacks when we have it.

Bernie Sanders said that he, along with fellow Democratic senators Peter Welch and Jeff Merkley, had formally introduced legislation seeking to block the sale of more than $20bn in US arms sales to Israel.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu’s extremist government has not simply waged war against Hamas. It has waged all-out war against the Palestinian people, killing more than 41,000 Palestinians and injuring more than 95,000, 60 percent of whom are women, children or elderly people,” Sanders said in a Wednesday news release.

The Senate will vote on the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval when it reconvenes in November. Sanders said Israel’s use of US weaponry in Gaza has violated stipulations outlined in the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and the Arms Export Control Act. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
