NCW Finds No Evidence of Minor Gang Rape at Medaram Jatara

The inquiry committee constituted by the NCW inspected the area around the Medaram Jatara where the alleged gang rape was believed to have taken place.

Hyderabad Feb 5 (PMI) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has ruled out reports of a minor being gang-raped during the recent Sammakka Saralamma Medaram Jatara in Telangana, based on findings of its preliminary inquiry.

An inquiry committee set up by the NCW visited Mulugu district on Thursday, February 5, to investigate allegations that surfaced in the media and on social media. The committee, led by NCW member Delina Khongdup, held discussions with District Collector T.S. Divakara and Superintendent of Police Ramnath Kekan at the Mulugu Collectorate, according to an official state government release.

The team later inspected the Medaram Jatara premises where the alleged incident was reported to have taken place. The preliminary investigation found that no gang rape incident occurred during the tribal fair.

The inquiry committee will submit its final report to the NCW after receiving a comprehensive written report from the police.

The NCW had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter on Wednesday, February 4, following reports alleging that a 13-year-old girl was sexually assaulted during the festival. Some media reports claimed that five youths from Chhattisgarh were involved in the alleged incident.

In response, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar constituted the inquiry committee to verify the allegations and establish the facts. (pressmediaofindia.com)
