NEW DELHI/ NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump had a productive conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the White House said on March 28, referring to the talks between the two leaders.

The New York Times reported that billionaire businessman Elon Musk joined the phone call between Modi and Trump when the two leaders discussed the situation in West Asia.

“President Trump has a great relationship with Prime Minister Modi and this was a productive conversation,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement when asked for comment on the New York Times report.

“Elon Musk participated in a phone call on Tuesday with President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, an unusual appearance by a private citizen on a call between two heads of state during a wartime crisis,” the report quoted unnamed US officials.

Musk back on terms with Trump

The New York Times report said the inclusion of Musk, confirmed by two US officials, suggests that the world’s richest man is back on better terms with the president.

Trump and Musk had a falling out last year following the billionaire’s departure from the government, where he had been tasked with slashing the work force.

The report said it is unclear why Musk was on the call or whether he spoke.

It was the first conversation between the two leaders since the West Asia conflict began on February 28.

During the conversation, Prime Minister Modi underlined the importance of ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible, noting that it is vital for global peace, stability and economic well-being.

In July, last year, Donald Trump called Elon Musk’s on June 6, 2025 plans to form a new political party “ridiculous,” launching new barbs at the tech billionaire and saying the Musk ally he once named to lead NASA would have presented a conflict of interest given Musk’s business interests in space.

A day after Musk escalated his feud with Trump and announced the formation of a new US political party, the Republican president was asked about it before boarding Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, as he returned to Washington upon visiting his nearby golf club.

President Donald Trump on March 24, 2026 spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the unfolding US-Israel war on Iran. This is the first conversation between the two leaders since February 28, which marked the beginning of the conflict that has since killed at least six Indians in the region and impacted free movement of energy resources through the Strait of Hormuz, sending shockwaves across the global energy market.

“Received a call from President Trump and had a useful exchange of views on the situation in West Asia. India supports de-escalation and restoration of peace at the earliest. Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the whole world,” said Prime Minister Modi in a post on social media.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump spoke by phone on Tuesday and discussed ‌the situation in the Middle East, including the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, US envoy to India Sergio Gor and Modi said in separate posts on social media.

This was the first call between the two leaders since the US and Israel launched coordinated attacks against Iran on February 28.
