Man gets 7-year rigorous imprisonment in dowry death case in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD’ 8’Jan 2024 (PMI) The District Court in Ranga Reddy sentenced Challa Rajender Reddy to seven years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with a dowry death case. The victim, 25-year-old Challa Rajini from Kesaram village in Shabad Mandal, succumbed to burn injuries on March 6, 2014. The accused, Challa Rajender Reddy, son of Malla Reddy, had married the deceased and received 12 tulas of gold and a promise of 2 acres of land from her parents.
Following a month of marital bliss, the situation took a dark turn for Rajini. She faced relentless harassment from her husband Rajender Reddy to secure land from her parents. On February 24, 2014, at 9:00 AM, Rajender Reddy purportedly assaulted her before leaving for work in Shadnagar. Distressed by the torment, she tried to end her life through self-immolation with kerosene. Despite swift medical attention at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad, she succumbed to injuries on March 6, 2014.
Sub-inspector Shabad Nagaraju recorded Challa Rajini’s statement while she was in the hospital. Initially, a case was filed under Women Burns (Cr.No: 27/2014) at Shabad police station. However, the charges were later updated to Section 304(B) IPC, indicating a dowry death. The investigation, initially led by Sub-inspector Shabad Nagaraju, but eventually Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chevella Sridhar took over the investigation. After the inquiry was completed, a charge sheet was filed in district court. During the trial, the district court in Ranga Reddy at LB Nagar convicted the accused Challa Rajender Reddy and sentenced him to seven years in prison.
