Leaders arrive in Italy for 3 days G7 summit

14-06-2024

APULIA/ PUGLIA: Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) countries Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States are meeting for a three-day summit to discuss global affairs in the southern Italian region of Puglia (Apulia).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he expects “important decisions” at the G7 summit, where he will also sign security agreements with Japan and the US.

G7 leaders hope to agree on an urgent $50bn loan to help Kyiv with defence, budgetary support and help for reconstruction after more than two years of war with Russia.

Pope Francis will address G7 leaders on artificial intelligence, an unprecedented appearance that reflects the Vatican’s growing interest in the new technology, its risks and rewards.

The G7 wealthy democracies will make new efforts to raise funds to address climate change at the United Nations climate summit in November, a source told media, citing extracts from a draft statement.

“We look forward to setting a new collective quantified goal on climate finance at COP 29,” said the draft of the statement to be issued at the end of the summit of G7 leaders in Puglia, southern Italy.

“We emphasize that the G7 countries intend to be leading contributors to a fit-for-purpose goal, underlining the importance of including those countries that are capable of contributing in any international public finance mobilization,” the draft said.

On Ukraine, you have this deal where we’re getting leaks from the final G7 communique that hasn’t been published yet. They’re going to use the interest on frozen Russian assets $300bn to support its war effort.

The other thing going on here is a US security deal for 10 years with Ukraine to create some momentum and Trump-proof the situation, in case Donald Trump comes back into office after the US election in November.

It’s known from Trump’s previous time as US president that policies can change such as the Iran nuclear deal and there’s always difficulties down the line. So although this is a 10-year deal, I don’t think there’s anything absolutely guaranteed there.

Modi who was sworn in for a third term as India’s prime minister just days ago, says he will participate in the G7’s Outreach Summit tomorrow.

In a statement, he said the focus of the talks will be on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa and the Mediterranean region.

Modi added that his government remains “committed to consolidate the India-Italy strategic partnership, and bolster cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean regions”.

“I am also looking forward to meeting other leaders participating in the Summit,” he said.

Ukraine and Japan on Thursday signed a security agreement on the sidelines of the G7 summit, Zelenskyy said.

“In 2024, Japan will provide Ukraine with $4.5 billion and will continue to support us throughout the agreement’s entire 10-year term,” he said.

Zelenskyy says he was expecting “important decisions” at a G7 summit, where he will also sign security agreements with Japan and the United States.

The G7 countries reached an agreement earlier on taking future interest from about $300bn in frozen Russian assets to provide a $50bn loan to Ukraine, a senior US official told reporters on the sidelines of the G7 meeting. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
