Israelis in Cairo as US says truce ‘in sight’

24-08-2024

CAIRO/ JERUSALEM: Israeli negotiators have reportedly arrived for the next round of ceasefire talks in Cairo, where the issue of the Egypt-Gaza border is expected to be discussed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied reports suggesting Israel is considering agreeing to an international force being deployed along the Philadelphi Corridor, the narrow border strip separating Gaza and Egypt.

US envoy to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield has urged calm in the Middle East as she told the UN Security Council a ceasefire and captive release deal is “now in sight”.

Medical sources say at least 47 people have been killed since dawn in Gaza as Israel’s military has stepped up operations in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza and Khan Younis in the south.

At least 40,265 people have been killed and 93,144 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7 and more than 200 were taken captive.

The crew, 23 Filipinos and two Russians of an oil tanker that was badly damaged in an attack in the Red Sea off Yemen have been rescued but an EU naval mission says the Greek-flagged Sounion now poses an “environmental hazard”.

Several projectiles hit the ship off the rebel-held Yemeni port of Hodeidah on Wednesday, causing a fire and cutting engine power.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels has since claimed the attack. They began attacking merchant shipping in the area in November in a campaign they have said is in solidarity with Gaza.

An hours-long Israeli raid on the Tulkarem refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Thursday left widespread destruction as bulldozers destroyed streets and demolished at least one building.

The Israeli military says it killed three “terrorists” in an air strike in the camp and arrested 40 others.

We are getting reports from our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues in Gaza of a new round of Israeli artillery shelling in the central area of the city of Khan Younis in the southern part of the Palestinian territory.

Israeli artillery shelling was also reported on the northern side of Nuseirat camp in central Gaza. There were no immediate reports on casualties from either area.

We’ll keep you updated on developments as we get them.

Margalit Moses, a 77-year-old Israeli who was freed from captivity in Gaza in November, has declined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s invitation to meet him today, saying she believes it would be a publicity stunt.

“Thank you for the invitation, but I will not take part in the meeting for photography and public relations purposes while my friends are languishing in the Hamas tunnels in Gaza,” she wrote in a public statement.

“In light of the reports of another [hostage-ceasefire] deal being thwarted on your part to release the abductees, I see no reason to come to a meeting with someone who proves by his actions that releasing the hostages is not top of mind and abandons them to their deaths,” she added.

Moses was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz along with her ex-husband Gadi Moshe Moses during the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7. Gadi remains in captivity in Gaza.

Dr Muhammad Saqr, a spokesman for the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, has made an urgent appeal for more medical supplies. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
