GAZA STRIP/ BEIRUT: Israeli tanks have bombed a school-turned-shelter in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya, killing at least seven Palestinians, the Wafa news agency reports.
The attack comes as Palestinians fleeing Beit Lahiya say they saw bodies lying in the streets and Israeli soldiers detaining and beating men.
Footage verified by Al Jazeera shows huge explosions and fires burning in Beirut’s southern suburbs as Israel launched another wave of attacks on the area.
In Gaza, at least 42,718 people have been killed and 100,282 wounded in Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, and more than 200 were taken captive.
The Israeli prime minister and his senior aides have sidestepped the US secretary of state’s request for Israel to publicly reject accusations it is pursuing a policy of ethnic cleansing in northern Gaza, according to media reports.
Blinken, who is in the Middle East as part of the US’s latest push for a ceasefire in Gaza, met with Netanyahu and senior aide Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer on Tuesday.
One topic of discussion was the so-called General’s Plan, The Times of Israel and CNN are reporting, both citing an unnamed US official.
Put forward in September by retired General Giora Eiland, the General’s Plan which calls for the expulsion of Palestinians from northern Gaza and the forced starvation and targeting of whoever stays behind has been labelled a roadmap to ethnic cleansing by critics.
According to both reports, during the meeting, Netanyahu insisted Israel is not pursuing the plan, but refused a request from Blinken to state so publicly.
Washington believes Netanyahu’s refusal was due to fear of alienating the far-right coalition partners he relies on to remain in power, The Times of Israel said.
Hezbollah has not put out a statement yet to say whether Hashem Safieddine was even there when the bombing took place on October 4, or whether he has been killed.
They did say, in a statement a couple of weeks ago, that they hadn’t seen him since that time.
It’s important to say just how important Hashem Safieddine is in Hezbollah.
Essentially, he was a member of the Shura Council, which is the governing body for Hezbollah and the head of the executive council.
He was also the cousin of Hassan Nasrallah, who was the secretary-general of Hezbollah before he was assassinated on September 27.
That’s why many people expected Safieddine to naturally step into Nasrallah’s place.
Dozens of deaths and injuries have been recorded over the past 24 hours in Gaza as the Israeli military launched more than 20 raids on various areas of the enclave, the Wafa news agency reports.
In northern Gaza, Israeli forces have continued their weeks-long siege, bombing homes and forcibly displacing residents while preventing the entry of food, medical supplies and basic necessities.
An Israeli air strike targeted a home in as-Saftawi, west of Jabalia in northern Gaza, leading to an unspecified number of casualties.
Israel bombed the Jabalia refugee camp and launched strikes on the at-Twam and Sheikh Radwan neighborhoods of Gaza City.
At least seven people were killed when Israeli tanks shelled the Zaid bin Haritha School in Beit Lahiya, which was sheltering displaced people. (Int’l News Desk)
