Israeli forces intensify attacks on Gaza despite ICJ ruling

26-05-2024

JERUSALEM/ GAZA CITY: Israel calls the ICJ binding order to immediately stop its assault on Rafah “outrageous, morally repugnant and disgusting”, says accusations it is committing genocide in Gaza “are false”.

UN’s emergency aid chief says Israel’s war on Gaza has been “a tragedy beyond words”, and it must “end this nightmare”.

Israeli tanks and troops advance into Rafah’s southeast and are moving towards the city’s densely populated western district.

Egypt agrees to allow UN aid through the crucial Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing after Israeli forces seized the Rafah land route as hunger spreads throughout war-battered Gaza.

At least 35,857 people killed and 80,293 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. The revised death toll in Israel from Hamas’s attack is 1,139, with dozens still held captive.

We’re only halfway through the day, and we’re seeing a surge in the attacks across the southern part of the Gaza Strip, mainly concentrated in Rafah city.

The military is moving close to Kuwaiti Hospital and has been bombing the surrounding area, including residential buildings across from it.

Several people have been injured and transferred to the hospital.

At this point, the situation is quite dire. For the past 17 days, there has been no fuel, medical or water supplies getting to the hospital, pushing it to the brink of collapse. The same exact scenario has played out in every governorate across Gaza since the initial weeks of this war.

Maha Hussaini, strategy director of Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, says the ICJ decision is an important and crucial step the world has awaited for decades, not just since the beginning of “the genocide” that started on October 7.

“This is finally a recognition by the international community that has long resorted to only timid statement about Israel’s violations,” she told media in Deir el-Balah.

Hussaini said that it is a recognition that “what Israel is doing in the Gaza Strip has actually crossed all limits”.

She added that for decades, the international community has continued not to only to defend, but also supported Israel by providing arms that have been involved in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

“The Palestinians have lost faith in humanity. They were abandoned and failed by the international community. This is now a milestone.”

At least 10 people have been killed and 17 injured in separate attacks in northern Gaza’s as-Saftawi neighborhood, report our colleagues and the Wafa news agency.

The Israeli attack targeted a school sheltering displaced people in the neighborhood, located just south of Jabalia, according to our colleagues on the ground, citing medical sources.

Northern Gaza’s Jabalia camp has been under fierce attack today, pushing more people to flee the area.

Israeli warplanes have bombed a house in northern Gaza’s Beit Hanoon, killing 10 people, including women and children, reports the Wafa news agency.

Israel’s Channel 12 reports that strong waves caused part of the dock to break off and drift into the sea before a US Navy crew secured it and brought it back ashore.

The US-built pier, located southwest of Gaza City, has delivered 97 truckloads of aid since it opened May 17, according to the United Nations, as key land crossings to the enclave remain shuttered. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
