BEIRUT/ GAZA STRIP/ NEW YORK: Tens of thousands of people flee southern Lebanon with little idea where to find safety as intense Israeli bombardment across Lebanon kills at least 569 people, including 50 children, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.

Agnes Callamard, the secretary-general of Amnesty International, told media that Israel is committing “violation of international law after violation”.
“Beginning with the indiscriminate attacks on Palestinians in Gaza, all the way to the buffer zone that has been established in Gaza over the last few months, to the killings of the humanitarian workers, to the killings of journalists,” she said.
“Many governments continue to arm Israel in contradiction with what they may say,” she added.
“In particular, the United States has enabled Israel to continue in the same direction.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s tone at the UN General Assembly could be described as moderate.
He spoke about the need to seek opportunity, rather than to concentrate on perceived threats.
He implied that he does not want to see any further regionalization of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, making particular reference to what is happening in Lebanon and the root cause of all of that: Israel’s war on Gaza. And he made some strong criticisms of Israel’s actions.
He spoke as well about the possibility of resuscitating the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the Iranian nuclear deal, on condition that the other parties in that accord meet their commitments.
