Israeli attacks kill 100s as ‘catastrophic’ hunger grips Gaza

01-12-2024

GAZA CITY: Almost 100 Palestinians have been reported killed in Israeli attacks in northern Gaza over the past 24 hours, including 75 killed in air strikes on two homes in the north’s Beit Lahiya.

Hunger and suffering among Palestinians in Gaza have reached “catastrophic” levels, the besieged territory’s Government Media Office says.

As the ceasefire in Lebanon enters a fourth day, Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem declared a “divine victory” in his movement’s war with Israel.

Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed at least 44,363 Palestinians and wounded 105,070 since October 7, 2023. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day, and more than 200 were taken captive.

In Lebanon, at least 3,961 people have been killed and 16,520 wounded in Israeli attacks since the war on Gaza began.

A Hamas delegation is reported to be travelling to Cairo for renewed talks on a ceasefire in Gaza.

An official in the Palestinian armed group told the French news agency AFP on Friday that a Hamas delegation will go to Cairo on Saturday “for several meetings with Egyptian officials to discuss ideas for a ceasefire and a prisoner accord in the Gaza Strip”.

The announcement comes days after a ceasefire went into effect between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah, a Hamas ally.

The United States has also announced a new diplomatic effort with Qatar, Turkiye and Egypt to reach a Gaza ceasefire deal.

The only ceasefire so far in Gaza, in November 2023, saw the release of about 100 captives by Hamas and allies in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

An Israeli drone killed Dr Ahmed Al-Kahlout, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital’s intensive care unit as he was passing through the gate of the besieged hospital in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, on Friday.

The Israeli military has intensified its deadly assault on northern Gaza, killing more than 100 people over the past 24 hours, including at least 75 people in two separate attacks on residential buildings in Beit Lahiya.

At least 2,700 Palestinians have now been killed since Israel’s brutal ground and aerial assault of the north began on October 5, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency.

Two teenage girls and a woman have been crushed to death as a crowd of Palestinians rushed to get bread at a bakery in central Gaza during a worsening food crisis in the war-ravaged territory.

Gaza’s Government Media Office has said hunger in the besieged enclave has reached “catastrophic” levels and called on the World Food Program to “uphold its duty” and resume the distribution of much-needed flour.

The Israeli military has reportedly breached its fragile ceasefire with Hezbollah several times in Lebanese villages and towns on the border, including with artillery fire and tank shelling.

Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Naim Qassem has declared “divine victory” after months of cross-border attacks and fighting with Israeli forces.

When Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire on Wednesday, Adnan Zaid breathed a sigh of relief. He and his family had been up all night because of Israel’s thunderous air strikes on Lebanon’s capital.

The fear subsided after the anticipated ceasefire took effect at 4am, yet uneasiness about the future arose. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
