Israel tortures Gaza detainees ‘day and night’

02-07-2024

CAIRO/ GAZA CITY: Palestinian detainees are tortured “day and night” in Israel’s prisons, the director of al-Shifa Hospital Dr Muhammad Abu Salmiya tells media after his release from eight months’ detention.

Israeli tanks advance on the Gaza City district of Shujayea, trapping civilians during intense fighting.

Exclusive footage obtained by media shows the Israeli military using Palestinian prisoners as human shields to search for explosives in Gaza.

At least 37,900 people have been killed and 80,060 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from the Hamas-led attacks is estimated at 1,139 with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza.

Israeli forces have killed a young man and wounded others bombing the Musabbeh area, north of the city of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, media reports.

At least 23 Palestinians were killed in the past 24 hours, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. So far, at least 37,900 people have been killed and 80,060 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7.

Many people in southern Lebanon have fled their towns and villages, moving to other areas for safety, following the recent uptick in cross-border fighting.

However, some are unable to leave since their livelihoods depend on the land, despite the fact the near-daily exchange of fire threatens their lives.

An Arab journalist Assed Baig reports from Marjayoun, southern Lebanon.

We reported earlier that dozens of Palestinians were released from Israel’s prisons this morning.

A video released by Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) shows three former detainees walking along a road after being left by the Israelis at Abu Holi Junction, south of Deir el-Balah, central Gaza.

The PRCS crews gave them water, checked their vital signs, and transported them to a hospital. Film director Osama al-Ashi has shared a video on Instagram showing thick smoke rising after Israeli artillery shelling on the Shujayea neighborhood.

According to local sources, the Israeli army is bombing residential blocks in the besieged district, which faces a ground assault for the fifth consecutive day.

The video has been verified by media.

The Israel Broadcasting Authority has quoted Defense Minister Yoav Gallant as saying the Israeli army needs 10,000 additional soldiers immediately.

He told the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that 4,800 of those required can be recruited from Israel’s ultra-Orthodox community, broadcaster N12 News reports.

Last week, Israel’s Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox Jewish men for military service. Under longstanding arrangements, men from the ultra-Orthodox community had been exempt from the draft for religious reasons.

The armed group of Hamas says its fighters attacked soldiers holed up inside a house in the neighborhood in the east of Gaza City.

A statement on Telegram said the building was targeted with a “TBG thermobaric rocket”, killing and wounding the soldiers. Fighters also “managed to snipe” an Israeli soldier inside a separate home in the neighborhood.

The Israeli military, meanwhile, reported “short-range encounters” with Palestinian fighters in Shujayea, claiming the air force “eliminated dozens of terrorists” and weapons sites in strikes. A statement on X says a warplane carried out an air strike on Hezbollah fighters spotted entering a building in southern Lebanon.

A fighter jet struck the building with a missile in the village of Blida after the operatives from the Lebanese armed group entered. It didn’t say if there were any casualties. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
