Israel strikes Yemen’s capital Sanaa

26-08-2025

SANAA/ JERUSALEM: Israel launched air strikes on the Yemeni capital of Sanaa on Sunday, killing two people and wounding five.

Israel said it targeted a military compound, where the presidential palace is located, missile bases, and oil and power stations.

Yemeni al-Masira TV channel reported that Israel struck an oil company facility on 60th Street in Sanaa, as well as the Haziz power station located to the south of the city.

The Iran-backed Huthis’ Al-Masirah TV reported a preliminary toll of “two dead and five wounded following the Israeli attack” on an oil company facility in the city.

A Houthi security source told media that the air raid targeted a municipality building in central Sanaa, adding there were reports of casualties.

The Yemeni group has been launching drones and missiles towards Israel in response to its war on Gaza.

Sunday’s strikes came a day after the Houthis fired a ballistic missile equipped with several sub-munitions “intended to be detonated upon impact”.

The Israeli army said this was the first time the Houthis had launched such a missile towards Israel.

It added that it is investigating why the missile was not intercepted but stressed that the failure was not linked to the missile type.

On 17 August, Israel struck an energy infrastructure site in Sanaa, with al-Masirah reporting at the time the Haziz power station was hit.

The Israeli strikes on Sanaa, which Israeli media say used more than 30 munitions to hit four targets, come two days after the Houthis said they launched a ballistic missile and two drones at Tel Aviv and Ashkelon in Israel.

The Israeli military has now confirmed that for the first time, the Yemeni group used a cluster warhead missile, a projectile that splits into multiple explosives as it is travelling towards its target area. Similar munitions were used by Iran to hit Israel during their 12-day war in June as well.

The Houthis have not commented on the claim, having only introduced the projectile as the Palestine-2 “hypersonic” ballistic missile, something they have used in previous strikes as well.

Footage circulating online after the Houthis’ strikes on Friday showed fragments coming down over Tel Aviv. No casualties or significant damage was reported by Israeli authorities. Below is more verified footage of the attacks on Sanaa, showing the bombing of the Haziz power station.

At least two people have been killed and five wounded in the Israeli attack on the Yemeni capital, according to Houthi-affiliated media.

The Israeli army said it targeted Houthi “military infrastructure”, including a site in the presidential palace and the Asar and Hizaz power plants.

However, The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society has confirmed that Israeli forces have arrested 14 people during three days of raids on al-Mughayyir village in Ramallah, including the head of the local council and the brothers of a child killed in an earlier Israeli attack.

Soldiers vandalized farmland, bulldozing vast areas and uprooting thousands of trees. Several Palestinians were severely beaten as Israeli forces conducted field interrogations.

In other operations in the occupied West Bank, Israeli soldiers stormed the city of Bethlehem and its suburbs with Special Forces arresting a recently freed prisoner from his family home after assaulting him, the Wafa news agency reported. They fired tear gas and sound grenades as well, but no injuries were reported. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
