Israel ‘strangles’ north Gaza, kills 640 in 17 days

22-10-2024

JERUSALEM/ GAZA STRIP: At least 33 Palestinians are killed in Israeli attacks throughout the Gaza Strip since dawn, medical sources say, including 18 in Jabalia refugee camp as the forced expulsion by troops in the north continues.

Medical sources tell Al Jazeera that at least 640 Palestinians have been killed since Israel began its military operation in northern Gaza 17 days ago.

The UN Human Rights Office says it is concerned Israel “may be causing the destruction of the Palestinian population in Gaza’s northernmost governorate through death and displacement”.

In Gaza, at least 42,603 people have been killed and 99,795 wounded in Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, and more than 200 were taken captive.

The Israeli army says about 30 rockets were fired from Lebanon to Israel this afternoon.

Aerial warning sirens were heard in the Upper Galilee and Central Galilee areas, a military statement said.

Some of the rockets were intercepted and others crashed in open areas, the army said, adding that there were no casualties.

rab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit says the group’s priority is to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.

Speaking at a meeting Beirut, he called for Israel’s prompt withdrawal from any Lebanese territories it has occupied or entered.

Aboul Gheit was also asked if Hezbollah could be destroyed, to which he replied: “You cannot destroy an idea.”

Nearly a month of all-out war has killed at least 1,470 people in Lebanon, although the real toll is likely higher.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society and the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs, 91 of these women were detained after October 7, 2023.

The organizations said three of the women are from Gaza, four from Israel proper, four others from occupied East Jerusalem, and 83 from the occupied West Bank.

They said 61 remain under arrest, five have been sentenced, and 28 are in administrative detention held without charge for an indefinite amount of time.

“Seven of the detainees were released in the 2023 exchange deal with Israeli authorities and were re-arrested at various times throughout the year. “Between 7 October 2023 and October 20, 2024, a total of 425 women were arrested by Israeli forces, with all but 94 released at various times.”

Israel’s airport authority has halted the takeoff and landing of flights at the country’s Ben Gurion airport, but did not provide a reason for the move.

“In coordination with the security system, landings and takeoffs at the airport were stopped,” said the airport authority in a statement.

Israel’s fighter jets struck branches of what it said is a Hezbollah-linked financial institution overnight.

The Israeli opposition leader has told European Union Ambassador to Israel Dimiter Tzantchev the pursuing of arms sanctions by some members of the bloc against Israel is “unforgivable”, according to local media quoting a statement by his office.

“The European Union countries must work together with Israel to advance a deal to return all the abductees,” he said on X after the meeting.

“An arms embargo on Israel while we are fighting against terrorist organizations is unacceptable,” he added in Hebrew. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
