Israel reports ‘large’ battles with Hamas in Gaza fighting

01-11-2023

JERUSALEM/ GAZA CITY: Israel says there were “large exchanges” with Hamas in Gaza overnight as its ground offensive continues.

The IDF says its forces were attacked by “terrorists” with anti-tank missiles and machine gun fire.

Air strikes on the Gaza Strip also continued overnight – Israel says more than 300 targets were hit in total.

Israel says it’s focusing on northern Gaza but continues to strike “all parts of the Strip.”

Hamas says it ambushed three Israeli vehicles with anti-tank missiles and attacked ground troops with shells in southern Gaza.

On Monday night, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying “this is a time for war.”

Israel has been bombing Gaza since the 7 October Hamas attacks that killed 1,400 people and saw at least 239 people kidnapped as hostages.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 8,000 people have been killed since Israel’s retaliatory bombing began.

Earlier, Last night, there was a little pause in air strikes here in Khan Younis. This morning, airstrikes resumed in some areas.

The south is considered safer but Israel keeps targeting the area where about two-thirds of the population have now moved to, after being warned to leave the north.

The main focus of the Israeli air strikes is now Gaza City. Very few people are still able to communicate there.

We managed to talk to someone in Jabalia camp, north of Gaza City, who said how huge the explosions were.

He said the dust and the smoke were a real issue for the civilians still living there.

On the other side, Shortages of supplies mean doctors in Gaza face a “moral trauma” on which patients to save, and which to let die, says the head of a medical group.

Speaking from Washington DC, Zaher Sahloul tells media about the conditions his teams are facing.

“They’re running out of anesthesia, medications for pain, blood products, antibiotics, gauze and many other items that are needed to stop the bleeding and treat patients in trauma.

“On top of that you have the bombing and limited, or shortage of, clean water, food, diesel and fuel.”

He adds: “So that means you have to make a decision as a doctor which patients you need to focus on, and maybe treat and save lives, and which patient you need to let go.” (Int’l News Desk)
