Israel kills 64 people in Gaza in 24 hours

22-07-2024

Health Ministry says at least 64 people killed and 105 injured in Israeli attacks across Gaza in past 24 hours. Many victims are still under rubble and on roads, with civil defence crews not able to reach them, it adds.

In Yemen, at least three people killed and 87 wounded in Israeli air attacks that hit an oil storage facility and power plant in Hodeidah port city, officials say. Israeli raids also cause injuries in southern Lebanon. Attacks come as countries call for an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory following a “landmark” International Court of Justice ruling.

At least 38,983 people have been killed and 89,727 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. The death toll in Israel from Hamas-led attacks on October 7 is estimated at 1,139 with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Israel must face punishment for its actions to deter anyone “from considering such cruelty again”.

Erdogan also commented on an advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that affirmed Palestinians’ right to self-determination and ruled that illegal Israeli settlements in occupied territories must be evacuated.

“I hope this decision and previous ones not implemented by Israel will bring an awakening in the international community,” he said.

Yemeni activists and journalists have shared videos showing the continued rise of smoke and flames from the oil and electricity storage facilities in the Hodeidah governorate, western Yemen.

Footage posted on social media platforms shows a huge fire burning in the sites targeted by the Israeli military hours earlier, especially the oil warehouses at the power plant.

The videos have been verified by Sanad, a media agency.

We have been reporting on the Israeli air attacks that targeted an oil storage facility and power plant in Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah, which killed three people and injured more than 80 others.

Medical sources in Yemen have told media that at least six people confirmed killed.

Illegal Israeli settlers have performed a Talmudic ritual in the compound of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem’s Old City under the protection of Israeli police, according to the Wafa news agency.

Witnesses reported that the settlers carried out provocative tours in groups while Israeli forces imposed restrictions on Muslim worshippers entering, Wafa said.

Under the status quo affirmed in 1967, only Muslims can pray within al-Haram al-Sharif, also known as Al-Aqsa Mosque. Non-Muslims can visit the site but cannot pray; this includes performing Talmudic rituals.

At least 38,983 Palestinians have been killed and 89,727 others injured in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

It said 64 people were killed and 105 others were injured in the past 24 hours.

The Israeli Institute for National Security Research of Tel Aviv University says the attack on Yemen’s Houthi-controlled areas will lead to the armed group’s violent reaction, leading to “an almost certain escalation” in the region.

It contradicted the military claim that the attack on Hodeidah aimed to cut off the arms smuggling route from Iran to the Houthis.

“Smuggling will continue and even increase. The attack will not deter or stop Houthi attacks, but could actually increase them,” it said.

The institute said Israel was sending a message to moderate Arab countries and the West, especially the US that the policy of containment had failed and “the Houthis must be targeted stronger”. (Int’l News Desk)
