Israel kills 49 in Gaza, 5 children in al-Mawasi camp

09-01-2025

GAZA STRIP: Israeli forces killed at least 49 Palestinians in Gaza over the past day, according to medical sources, including five children in attacks on tents in the so-called “safe zone” of al-Mawasi.

US President-elect Donald Trump demands that Hamas releases Israeli captives held in Gaza, by the time he enters office, warning again that “all hell will break out” otherwise.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati warns the international sponsors of the Israel-Hezbollah truce deal about continued Israeli violations as Lebanon’s army deploys units to southern areas, which Israeli forces have pulled out from.

Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed at least 45,885 Palestinians and wounded 109,196 since October 7, 2023. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day and more than 200 were taken captive.

The mother of Dr Hussam Abu Safia has died of a heart attack, according to the Quds News Network and the Palestinian Information Center.

Israeli forces arrested Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, during a raid on the medical facility on December 27, accusing him of being a Hamas operative.

The 51-year-old pediatrician, who gained international attention for his video messages about the dire conditions inside the besieged hospital, has been held incommunicado in an unknown location ever since.

An Israeli attack on the Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza on Tuesday has killed five members of the same family.

Witnesses and survivors told media that the bombing took place as families were sleeping and destroyed homes adjacent to the targeted building. “We woke up to the sound of an explosion and we came here, found a young lady on the ground, a young boy half buried and many other bodies. The entire family was killed,” said Khalid Nofal. “Only one person was pulled alive and we had to bring hammers to pull them out.”

Another survivor, Amal Baker, said the attack on her neighbor’s home “totally destroyed” her own house and wounded her daughters.

“The strike was around midnight, while we were asleep here in the bedroom. We felt everything falling on us. We couldn’t even hear it. The kids and I started calling each other and the living room was dark, we could not find each other,” she recounted.

“It was with difficulty that we found a mobile with which we turned on the flashlight to be able to see what was around. We got up to see where the strike was, it turned out to be at our neighbors. Even my daughters were injured. They are now at the Baptist Ahli Hospital.”

The Israeli military has bombed the Kallab family home in Gaza City, killing a 15-day-old baby, according to Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Anas al-Sharif.

More people have been injured in the attack, which took place in the vicinity of the Abu al-Amin intersection in the city’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood.

Mustafa Barghouti, the secretary-general of the political party Palestinian National Initiative, has said there is “no justification” for the escalation in violence between Palestinian Authority security forces and Palestinian armed groups in the occupied West Bank in recent weeks.

“The last thing that Palestinians need now is a violent confrontation between Palestinians and Palestinians, especially armed confrontations,” he told media.

Israeli forces are ramping up their attacks across the Gaza Strip, including on the “humanitarian zone” in al-Mawasi, and causing significant destruction to residential homes and civilian infrastructure. (Int’l News Desk)
