GAZA STRIP: Hamas has submitted its response to US President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan, with the group agreeing to hand over administration of the enclave to Palestinian technocrats and free all Israeli captives.
The Palestinian group’s response did not address the crucial issue of its disarmament, but it said it was willing to “immediately enter” negotiations through mediators.
In a video address following Hamas’s statement, Trump said he believes Hamas is ready for a “lasting peace”, as he called on Israel to “immediately stop bombing Gaza”.
Israel, however, has continued its deadly bombardment of Gaza, killing at least 20 Palestinians since dawn.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 67,074 people and wounded 169,430 since October 2023. Thousands more are believed to be buried under the rubble. A total of 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023, attacks and about 200 were taken captive.
UN rights chief Volker Turk has called the growing momentum to end the war on Gaza a “vital opportunity”.
Israel says 137 activists who were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla it intercepted have been sent to Turkiye.
The WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has hailed Trump’s proposed plan for Gaza, stating that the “best medicine is peace”.
At least 66 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in the past 24-hour reporting period as the death toll since October 2023 tops 67,000, according to the Health Ministry.
Turkiye’s Erdogan says Hamas showed its readiness for peace by backing Trump’s plan, adding that “a window of opportunity” has opened for lasting peace in the region.
‘US needs to push Israel to implement first part of Trump’s plan’
Security analyst Rashid al-Mohanadi has called the quick response from Hamas that approved the initial parts of Trump’s plan, and the reciprocated response from the US president last night, “a breath of fresh air”.
“The welcoming of Qatar, Egypt and other important actors in the region shows that there is a regional push (for Trump’s plan),” he said, adding that the US’s role is very critical now.
“It is currently the only actor that can put material pressure on Netanyahu for him to go towards this deal,” he stressed.
Al-Mohanadi also said that attacks on Gaza continued even after Hamas’s reaction and Trump’s call on Israel to stop.
He added that the Israeli army said on social media that it is operationally ready to implement the first phase of the plan if the Israeli political leadership decides to do it.
“So we know where the next push needs to happen: The US needs to push the Israeli government to implement the first part of the plan.”
Hamas will negotiate more as Trump plan is almost ‘surrender’
The Palestinian group wants guarantees that if it releases the Israeli captives, there will be implementation of the rest of Trump’s 20-point plan, and for it to be made clear what the future governance of Gaza will look like, says Adnan Hayajneh, a professor of international relations and US foreign policy at Qatar University.
Hamas was not consulted for Trump’s plan, Hayajneh added, making the group fearful that Israel could once again violate any ceasefire, as it did in March of this year. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
