GAZA STRIP: Israeli forces conduct raids in the occupied West Bank as the bombardment of Gaza continues on New Year’s Day, with at least 17 Palestinians killed in northern Jabalia and the central Bureij refugee camp.
Days of heavy rain have flooded hundreds of makeshift shelters across the Strip, piling more misery on displaced Palestinians as Israel continues to restrict the entry of humanitarian aid.
The United Nations says Israel’s attacks on Gaza’s hospitals have pushed its healthcare system to “the brink of total collapse”, and Israeli justifications that Palestinian armed groups use the facilities are “vague, broad” and “contradicted by publicly available information”.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 45,553 Palestinians and wounded 108,379 since October 7, 2023. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day, and more than 200 taken captive.
Israeli forces have killed 1,091 Palestinian infants since October 7, 2023, including 238 born and killed during the ongoing war, Gaza’s Government Media Office says.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has killed at least 17,400 children in Gaza, according to Palestinian officials. That is one child killed every 30 minutes. Thousands more are missing under the rubble, presumed dead.
Gaza’s civil defence teams say they cannot respond to distress calls from families because of intense Israeli bombardment.
“Those besieged in the areas of incursion suffer from a complete lack of livelihood. The suspension of our services has completely affected the lives of citizens who are exposed to Israeli bombardment,” a civil defence member told Al Jazeera.
Israel’s military assault expanded across the northern areas of the Palestinian territory in October, and last week it targeted a major hospital now emptied of its staff and patients.
Children continue to die in Gaza as winter temperatures drop and rain pounds the war-torn Palestinian territory.
In southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, Mahmoud al-Fasih said he found his infant daughter, Sila, “frozen from the cold” in their small tent near al-Mawasi beach, where they were displaced from Gaza City.
He rushed her to the hospital in the area which Israel has designated a “humanitarian zone” but she was already dead.
Dr Ahmad al-Farra at Nasser Hospital said the three-week-old baby arrived at the hospital with “severe hypothermia, without vital signs, in cardiac arrest that led to her death”.
Media report at least four Palestinians have been killed and many others injured in an attack by an Israeli drone on the al-Manara neighborhood, southeast of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.
Medical sources told Al Jazeera that 22 Palestinians have so far been killed in Israeli attacks throughout Gaza since dawn, including 17 in the besieged north.
Palestinian media quoted local sources as saying an Israeli quadcopter drone and artillery have been bombing continuously since the morning in the Shujayea and Sha’af neighborhoods east of central Gaza City.
Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 45,553 Palestinians and wounded 108,379 since October 7, 2023, Gaza’s Health Ministry reports.
