GAZA STRIP: Israel intensifies its land and air attacks on Gaza, with artillery and air raids hitting several areas of Khan Younis in the south.
The WHO says a Palestinian child has died due to disruption of medical care after Israeli forces bombed the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, as global condemnation grows over the assault.
Yemeni officials say US attacks near the capital, Sanaa, have killed six people and wounded 20, as the Houthi rebel group claims missile attacks on Israel’s main airport.
Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 50,983 Palestinians are confirmed dead and 116,274 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. The Government Media Office updated its death toll to more than 61,700, saying thousands of people missing under the rubble are presumed dead.
At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attacks and more than 200 were taken captive.
Israeli authorities have blocked the entry of all humanitarian aid to Gaza’s 2.3 million people since early March. On March 18, Israel unilaterally broke a ceasefire that had held since January, relaunching attacks across Gaza and killing hundreds more Palestinians.
On March 25, the UN announced it was withdrawing 30 percent of its international staff from Gaza after an Israeli air strike killed a Bulgarian UN staff member and severely wounded six other foreign workers.
Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), warned that another hunger crisis looms in Gaza and accused Israel of an illegal “weaponization of humanitarian aid”.
The combination of the bombs and debilitating humanitarian situation is rapidly worsening conditions for the people of Gaza, but it has been a constant since the beginning of the war in October 2023.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas emphasised the urgent need for a ceasefire and the swift delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Abbas and Macron discussed the Palestinian Authority’s assumption of full responsibility in the Gaza Strip, including security duties, according to the Wafa news agency.
Both leaders reiterated the necessity of advancing a two-state solution based on international legitimacy and preparing for the upcoming international peace conference scheduled for June.
Abbas thanked France for its stance against forced displacement, its call for an immediate ceasefire, and its unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to remain in their homeland.
The Palestinian leader also reiterated the rejection of any proposals or schemes aimed at displacing the Palestinian people in Gaza, the occupied West Bank or East Jerusalem.
On the other side, the Houthi-run Health Ministry reports that at least 123 Yemeni people, including children and women, have been killed and 247 others wounded in US air attacks since March 16.
It condemned “blatant US aggression on the homeland and its direct targeting of civilian objects and civilians”, including the attacks on the factory near Sanaa last night that killed seven people and wounded 29 others, including five children.
“This crime, added to the criminal record of the American-Zionist enemy, is a full-fledged war crime and a flagrant violation of all international laws and conventions,” the ministry said. (Int’l News Desk)
