JERUSALEM: Israel is set for one of the most pivotal days in its domestic history, with parts of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition debating whether to pause judicial changes that have set off civil unrest even as other lawmakers vowed to press on.
Israelis were bracing Monday morning for one of the most pivotal days in their domestic history, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said to be considering whether to pause a judicial overhaul that has divided society and set off civil unrest even as hard-line members of his coalition gathered in Parliament to proceed with the plan.
Unrest broke out overnight in parts of Israel after Netanyahu fired his defense minister late Sunday for criticizing the overhaul, prompting demonstrators to surge into the streets, universities to shut their doors in protest at the judicial plan, and union leaders to hint of a looming general strike.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to speak on Monday, according to Israeli media reports, as opposition grows to his bitterly contested plans to overhaul the country’s judiciary.
An official from his own Likud party had told Israeli media that Netanyahu was going to announce that he was halting his plan, but new reports indicate that the prime minister has postponed his speech after pressure from far-right figures within his own government pushing for him not to back down.
The judicial overhaul, which would give the executive control over appointing judges to the Supreme Court and allow the government to override court rulings, has drawn mass protests for weeks. Israel’s leading labour union, Histadrut, has announced a general strike, with its head saying that Israel had marched “to the abyss”.
Netanyahu also dismissed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant a day after Gallant spoke out against the planned judicial reforms.
On trial for corruption charges that he denies, Netanyahu has so far vowed to continue with the project and a central part of the overhaul package was scheduled to be ratified in parliament this week. (Int’l News Desk)
