Israel hit Tehran oil depots; Bahrain desalination plant damage

11-03-2026

THERAN/ MANAMA: The US and Israel continue to strike Iran, hitting oil storage depots and refining facilities in Tehran for the first time, and sparking large fires across the capital.

An Iranian drone attack caused material damage to a water desalination plant in Bahrain, the country’s interior ministry has said.

This comes a day after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the US bombed a freshwater desalination plant in Qeshm Island in southern Iran, setting a “precedent”.

Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates report more Iranian strikes after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian offered an apology and pledged to halt attacks on Gulf States if no attacks originate from their territories.

Will pursue every successor of Iran’s Khamenei: Israel

The Israeli military has issued a new threat against Iranian leaders, saying it would pursue every successor of Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli attacks on February 28.

In a social media post in ‌Farsi, the military also threatened it would pursue every person who seeks to appoint a successor, referring to the Assembly of Experts, the body charged with choosing the Islamic Republic’s supreme ‌leader.

Tehran governor slashes fuel quota for residents

Fuel quota with personal card has been reduced from 30 litres (7.9 gallons) per day to 20 litres (5.2 gallons), according to Iran’s Tehran province governor quoted by the Fars new agency.

The official was also quoted as saying that people should not worry about fuel as disruptions in fuel supply will be resolved quickly, promising to revert the measure after “two or three days”.

Red Crescent warns of toxic rain risks

The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has warned civilians to take precautions, saying rain could become toxic after explosions at oil facilities. Such rain could cause chemical burns to the skin and damage to the lungs, it said.

In a post on Telegram, the agency gave the following instructions:

During rainfall after explosions, do not leave your home under any circumstances.

If you are outdoors, immediately take shelter under concrete or metal roofs and avoid sheltering under trees.

If rain comes into contact with the skin, do not rub the affected area under any circumstances and rinse it only with a continuous stream of cold water.

Immediately change clothes that have been soaked by the rain and place them in a sealed bag.

Why are water desalination plants important to the Gulf?

As we reported earlier, Bahrain said an Iranian drone attacked a water desalination plant, marking the first time an Arab country has reported Iran targeting a desalination plant during the past nine days of the war. It comes after Iranian authorities said the US targeted Iran’s desalination plant in the country’s southern island of Qeshm.

Countries in the Gulf have extremely limited natural freshwater resources leading to a heavy reliance on energy-intensive seawater desalination to meet their water needs.

Kuwait’s Fire Force says two of its officers have been killed “while performing duties”.

The statement published on social media did not provide details on the circumstances of their deaths. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
