Israel has killed 1.8% of Gaza’s population since Oct. 7

13-08-2024

GAZA CITY: Figures from Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics show Israeli forces have killed 1.8 percent of the Gaza Strip’s population since October 7. Some 75 percent of the victims were under the age of 30.

Hamas called on the United States, Qatar and Egypt to submit a plan to implement the ceasefire proposal put forward by US President Joe Biden, instead of holding “more rounds of negotiations” and discussing new proposals for Gaza.

More than 75,000 Palestinians in southern Gaza have been forced to flee in the past few days, according to the UN, as Israeli forces issued new evacuation orders in Khan Younis and launched their third military operation in the city since October.

At least 39,790 people have been killed and 92,002 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, and more than 200 were taken captive.

The victims included a paramedic and were killed in Israeli shelling of the town of Bani Suhaila, east of the city of Khan Younis.

AJA is also reporting that Israeli forces bombed the Nuseirat refugee camp and the town of Zawayda in central Gaza, destroying at least four houses.

The attacks come as Israel’s military launched a third ground invasion of southern Khan Younis, forcing some 75,000 people to flee their shelters again.

The Israeli military activated air raid sirens in northern Israel and said it detected 30 projectiles crossing the border from Lebanon. A number of rockets fell on open areas, it said. There were no injuries. The military added that it was attacking the sources of the fire.

Before every weightlifting competition, Mohammed Hamada thinks of Gaza.

He recalls the destruction of the city he grew up in and the mass grave he dug for his neighbor’s. These harrowing circumstances have created a unique athlete one who lost 18kg (40 pounds) in five months, ate animal food to survive, and ultimately left Gaza and his family behind to pursue his dream of competing in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

In a statement, Hamas has said that they want to go back to the original framework outlined by US President Joe Biden on May 31. This is the framework the Israelis had said they had agreed to and that was brought forth by the Americans. It was a three-part plan that would ultimately see an end to the war in the third phase.

There were negotiations that were ongoing in the months of June and July but they were derailed and constantly failing due to continued Israeli bombardment in Gaza. Hamas at the time had released several statements saying that continued Israeli aggression was not going to work if they were going to negotiate a ceasefire. And we saw this just the other day, when a school in Gaza City was struck, killing at least 100 Palestinians.

Now, Israeli media is reporting this by saying that Hamas has rejected the framework of talk’s altogether but that is not true, Hamas is saying they want to go back to the initial plan that was on the table. Hamas has accused Israel of adding amendments to the deal, while the Israelis have accused Hamas of adding several other conditions that were not previously agreed upon but we also have to remember that there are two hardliners on each side of the negotiating table. You have Benjamin Netanyahu, who’s gone into these negotiations with several red lines and several non-negotiables, and Hamas, which said that they want to see ultimately an end to the war entirely and Yahya Sinwar who Israel accuses of masterminding the October 7 attacks is going to be representing Hamas in these indirect negotiations for the first time.
