Israel again targets Hospital as Gaza toll passes 45,000

18-12-2024

GAZA STRIP: Israeli forces continue to pound Gaza, firing at the Kamal Adwan Hospital in the north and killing two people in Beit Lahiya, four in the Shati refugee camp and five others in Gaza City.

The victims of Israel’s bombings included Khaled Nabhan, a grandfather in Gaza who touched millions around the world after he was filmed mourning his slain granddaughter, calling her the “soul of my soul”.

Earlier, Israeli forces bombed a UNRWA-run school in Khan Younis, killing at least 20 people, after a ground assault on another school in Beit Hanoon, which killed 43 Palestinians.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 45,028 Palestinians and wounded 106,962 since October 7, 2023. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day, and more than 200 were taken captive.

As we’ve been reporting, an Israeli strike has killed Khaled Nabhan, a Palestinian grandfather known for his emotional goodbye to his three-year-old granddaughter, Reem, who was killed in an Israeli attack in November of 2023.

A video of Nabhan cradling the lifeless body of Reem and calling her the “soul of my soul” garnered hundreds of thousands of views on social media and was covered by international news outlets.

His grief was seen as emblematic of the pain Israeli bombardment was inflicting on the besieged territory.

Nearly 13 months later, his own killing shows the toll of Israel’s war on Gaza and the absence of safety anywhere in the territory.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) says only 285,000 displaced Palestinians in Gaza had received essential shelter materials by late November.

This leaves some 945,000 people still in need of assistance.

“We’ve received only a fraction of the aid required to address the shelter crisis,” said Jeroen Quanjer, the council’s shelter chair in Palestine.

“Hundreds of thousands of displaced families are enduring the winter cold and rain without meaningful protection. Israeli authorities’ repeated denial of essential shelter materials prevents us from scaling up our response to build emergency shelters that can withstand Gaza’s winter conditions.”

The Israeli military has shelled a house in the Daraj neighborhood, east of Gaza City, killing at least eight people and wounding several more, an Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent reports.

Earlier, we reported that at least four people were killed after Israeli forces carried out a drone and missile attack in the Shati refugee camp, northwest of Gaza City.

We will bring you more information when we have it.

We’ve been covering Israel’s weeks-long assault on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Beit Lahiya, where staff have reported sniper attacks on the facility’s intensive care unit.

An Arabic correspondent in Gaza is now reporting that Israeli forces have sent in three explosive-laden robots to the area around the hospital.

The Gaza-based Al-Aqsa TV also said Israeli quadcopter drones have dropped more than 10 bombs on the hospital in recent hours, causing a fire to break out on the facility’s third floor.

We will bring you more information when we have it.

There have also been attacks by quadcopters on the emergency department of the hospital throughout the day. Many of the medical staff there are at risk of losing their lives simply because they are inside the hospital and doing their job – treating people as much as they can. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
