Indore 2nd Jan ’26 (PMI) A six-month-old baby, Avyan Sahu, died on December 29 after falling ill due to suspected contaminated drinking water in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area. The incident has once again raised concerns over water safety in the locality.
Avyan lived with his family in the Marathi Mohalla of Bhagirathpura. According to the family, the baby became ill after packaged milk was diluted with water, which they believe was contaminated. He later developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea, leading to his death.
The Madhya Pradesh government has announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh for each family that lost a member in the outbreak. However, Avyan’s family has refused to accept the compensation.
Speaking to PTI, Avyan’s grandmother, Krishna Sahu, said the loss of the child could not be compensated with money. “Our child is gone. Will compensation bring him back? Money is not greater than a child,” she said.
The family shared that Avyan was born after 10 years of prayers and vows. “The entire family prayed for his birth and made a vow at Hussain Tekri Dargah. Our prayers were answered, but we never imagined he would leave us so soon,” she said, breaking down.
Local residents claim that at least 15 people have died over the past year due to a vomiting-diarrhoea outbreak caused by contaminated water in Bhagirathpura, with Avyan being the youngest victim. However, the health department has not confirmed these figures and stated that only four deaths have occurred due to the outbreak. (pressmediaofindia, com)
