New Delhi, March 19:(PMI) India continues to witness a steady rise in natural gas consumption, with current daily usage estimated at around 190–195 million standard cubic meters (MMSCMD). The demand is largely driven by industrial activity, followed by power generation, transport, and domestic sectors.
According to energy sector estimates, the industrial sector accounts for the largest share of gas consumption at approximately 30–35 percent. Fertilizer plants, oil refineries, and heavy industries remain the primary users of natural gas.
The power sector contributes around 20–25 percent, although its share remains limited due to the continued dominance of coal-based power generation. Experts believe that cheaper gas prices could significantly boost gas-based electricity production.
The transport sector, particularly compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in major cities, consumes nearly 15–20 percent of the total gas supply. Meanwhile, domestic usage, including piped natural gas (PNG) and LPG for cooking, accounts for about 10–15 percent.
Commercial establishments such as hotels, restaurants, and hospitals make up the remaining 5–10 percent of consumption.
India is also aiming to increase the share of natural gas in its overall energy mix from around 6 percent to 15 percent in the coming years, as part of efforts to reduce pollution and dependence on coal.(pressmediaofindia.com)
