Hyderabad Traffic Police Launches Major Crackdown to Curb Wrong-Side Driving Deaths

Over 10,000 Motorists Penalized in One Week; Traffic Police Intensify Surveillance and Awareness Drives

Hyderabad, October 31(Najaf Ali Shoukat-PMI) In a sweeping action to curb rising road accidents, the Hyderabad Traffic Police have intensified their campaign against wrong-side driving, booking more than 10,000 offenders in just one week. Officials say the dangerous practice has become a major cause of congestion and fatal crashes across the city.

According to police data, 10,652 motorists were caught driving on the wrong side during a special enforcement drive held in the first week of October. The offence is particularly common on multi-lane roads, near U-turns, and in busy market areas where commuters try to save time by taking illegal shortcuts.

DCP (Traffic-I) Rahul Hegde said that wrong-side driving continues to pose a grave threat to public safety.

“Motorists often use medians or service roads as shortcuts to bypass congestion. These reckless moves lead to sudden conflicts and serious accidents. Our focus is on consistent enforcement and behavioural change,” he said.

The Traffic Police, supported by the Road Transport Authority (RTA), have stepped up both mobile and static checks, along with camera-based surveillance to identify repeat offenders. Vehicles have been seized and on-the-spot challans issued during surprise operations.

Joint Commissioner (Traffic) D. Joel Davis has reiterated that violations will attract strict penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act, and warned habitual offenders of harsher action.

Traffic safety experts, however, emphasize that enforcement alone cannot solve the problem. They recommend better lane markings, improved signage at U-turns, protected median openings, and sustained public awareness campaigns to promote safer driving behavior.

Road safety advocates and motorists alike agree that continuous enforcement, road engineering improvements, and community engagement are key to reducing violations and preventing avoidable deaths.(pressmediaofindia.com)
