Hyderabad Residents Losing ₹1 Crore Daily to Cyber Frauds: Commissioner Sajjanar IPS

Hyderabad police unveiled the ‘Cyber Simbha’ logo and QR code and distributed badges to the volunteers, saying cybercrimes can be curbed through self-awareness.
Hyderabad, Nov 9 ( Najaf Ali Shoukat-PMI): Cybercrimes are costing Hyderabad residents nearly ₹1 crore every single day, according to City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, who sounded the alarm during the launch of a state-wide awareness campaign on Sunday.

Speaking at the inauguration of the “Jaagrut Hyderabad – Surakshit Hyderabad” (Aware Hyderabad – Safe Hyderabad) initiative, Sajjanar said cybercriminals are preying on people’s greed, fear, and lack of awareness to commit online frauds. The programme, launched jointly with Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivdhar Reddy, seeks to educate citizens about digital safety and preventive measures.

As part of the campaign, officials unveiled the ‘Cyber Simbha’ logo and QR code and distributed badges to trained volunteers who will help spread awareness across communities.

DGP B. Shivdhar Reddy said that public awareness is key to curbing cybercrime, noting that online frauds have seen a sharp increase in the past decade. He announced a statewide drive to tackle cyber threats and warned that the issue has become a major social challenge rather than a mere law enforcement problem.

“Fraudsters are exploiting technology to access people’s personal data — wealth, location, and age — and then deceive them through fake calls and online traps,” Reddy said. “Women, senior citizens, and homemakers are the most frequent targets, especially when they are alone.”

He added that the police have intensified cyber patrolling and introduced new safety measures to reduce cyber incidents compared to last year.

Sajjanar urged citizens — especially youth, retired persons, and community leaders — to join the anti-cybercrime movement. “If one person educates ten others, and each of them teaches more, it can grow into a powerful community initiative. Every home needs at least one ‘Cyber Simbha’ — an informed citizen who can protect their family and neighbourhood,” he said.

He also advised people to avoid suspicious calls, links, and apps, never share OTPs or banking details, and always use strong passwords. Victims of online fraud should immediately contact the cyber helpline 1930 or file complaints on the national portal www.cybercrime.gov.in.

The event was attended by Additional CP (Crimes) Sri M. Srinivas, Joint CP (Traffic) Sri D. Joel Davis, DCP (Cyber Crime) Smt. Dhara Kavitha, all Zonal DCPs, colony residents, and others.
