Hyderabad Police Act Promptly On Complaint By YS Sharmila

The Hyderabad Police swung into action on the complaint lodged by YS Sharmila on a slanderous campaign of character assassination being carried against her and her family members on social media. Acting on her complaint, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar referred the matter to the cyber crime division, following which the CCS wing registered a case.

The case was registered against unidentified individuals on social media under section 67 IT Act and IPC Section 509. The case is being investigated by a specially constituted team headed by additional DCP, Raghuveer. Section 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman), could invite simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.

Punishment under 67 IT (for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) could be imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years and with fine which may extend to five lakh rupees and in the event of second or subsequent conviction with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to five years and also with fine which may extend to ten lakh rupees.
