Hyderabad, November 14 (Spl Correspondent-Dr Zeeshan Abbas): The Hyderabad Metro Rail authorities are actively considering increasing the frequency of metro trains to address the steadily rising passenger rush. Although nearly 5.5 lakh commuters travel by metro every day, the corporation has not moved forward with plans to add more coaches. Instead, the management is now examining ways to adjust the timing of train services to ease congestion.
Plans for a Train Every 2 Minutes
Currently, metro trains are available every three minutes, but officials are planning to reduce this interval by one minute so that a train is available every two minutes. Trial runs are already in progress. After assessing the technical and operational feasibility, the new schedule is likely to be implemented.
Overcrowding Causes Passenger Discomfort
With the increased number of passengers, metro travel has become uncomfortable for many. Overcrowding—especially during peak hours—has become a major concern. Passengers are finding it increasingly difficult to board fully packed coaches, leading many to hesitate during rush hours.
Since introducing new coaches is not immediately feasible due to financial constraints and the fact that manufacturing coaches takes nearly a year, the metro corporation is focusing on optimizing existing operations.
Short-Term Relief Through Frequency Enhancement
Authorities believe that reducing the interval between trains will provide temporary relief from congestion. Currently, each three-coach train accommodates around 900 passengers, and services run every three to five minutes. If the frequency is increased, even if one train is full, another train with available space will arrive within two minutes, reducing waiting time and easing the passenger load.
Long-Term Plans Delayed
Although proposals were previously discussed to extend metro services and add additional coaches, these plans have not yet been implemented. The lack of funds and the long lead time required for coach manufacturing have caused delays. Therefore, metro officials see increasing frequency as the most viable immediate solution to address the severe overcrowding faced by commuters. (pressmediaofindia.com)
