Hyderabad, Demanding that the State government extend ex gratia to the Nerella victims, all Opposition parties condemned the Nerella incident. They also demanded that IT Minister KT Ramarao to tender unconditional apologies to the Sircilla people and resign as minister.
The Congress party SC Cell conducted a round table on Nerella incident here on Thursday at Somajiguda Press Club. Speaking on the occasion, TPCC Chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Congress was waging movement on behalf of Nerella victims and trying to do justice to them. Nerella incident was shameful, he said and explained that the poor people died in accidents taking place due to illegal sand transport. The police applied third degree methods and tortured them by filing illegal cases when irate people set ablaze some lorries.
“Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao “heckled” former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar when she got tears while listening to families of victims about atrocities of police”, he said. He stressed the need of unity of all political parties to wage movements against such incidents. He demanded that the Chief Minister and his son tender apology to the people of Telangana. He also revealed that the Congress party lodged a complaint with National Human Rights Commission and National SC Commission on the issue.
Uttam Kumar said an all-party delegation will meet DGP on Friday. He said they also sought an appointment with the Governor. The All-party committee will stage protest at Ambedkar statue on August 15 and meet President of India on August 22 and 23. The all-party committee will launch “Chalo Sircilla padayatra” if the government failed to respond on the issue. He alleged that sand contractor belongs to KCR family. The downfall of TRS government has started from Nerella incident, he added.
BJP leader Chintha Sambamurthy said doing illegal sand business with the help of government was atrocious. He said the BJP was condemning the attacks on Dalits in Nerella.
Former Judge Chandra Kumar said he never heard about such barbaric torture towards Nerella Dalits. The injuries suffered by the victims were not cured even after 21 days and urinating blood. The police allegedly administered electric shock to victims’ private parts after being stripped naked, he said. Surprisingly, the police included village vice-sarpanch’s name, who informed the police about the incident, in the list of culprits.
CPI leader Bala Swamy alleged that the State government was encouraging violence by sand smugglers. The Chief Minister raised curtain to “Gadi rule and dictator rule”, he added.
KCR, KTR Should Resign: Mothkupally
TTDP leader Mothkupally Narsimhulu said the Nerella incident proved that KCR, who won on sentiment vote imposed suppressive rule and police raj in Telangana. Undeclared emergency was going on in Telangana. He asked the State government to file cases against the owners of the lorries which run over people. “The police beat the victims till their bones broken. Is it justified to the police? Is it justifiable to the police to threaten wives of victims saying that they will send them to brothels and their children to orphanages”, he asked. He said KCR, who overshadowed erstwhile Nizam in ruling and his minister son KTR, who says he doesn’t know about the incident, have no right to remain in office. He said all political parties would extend support to the “Chalo Sircilla Padayatra”.
‘Police liable for punishment under SC. ST Act’
TJAC chairman Prof. Kodandaram has congratulated all political parties for coming on a single forum to condemn the Nerella incident. The police targeted families on pretext of burning lorries. The District Collector and police never bothered about overloading and over-speeding sand lorries though Nerella villagers lodged complaints several times. The Sircilla SP, who never bothered about the complaints of the people, resorted to third degree methods against the people and abusing them taking caste name. “The attack by police will attract SC, ST Atrocities case and the case should be filed against him”, he said. Stressing the need of all political parties remaining united on this issue, Kodandaram demanded that the State government make the names of sand transporters public. He also demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the “sand danda”, with a sitting judge. The villagers say the ground water level was depleting due to sand mining resulting in steep fall in agriculture in the area. Making it clear that they will extend support to all parties with regard to Nerella issue, Kodandaram said there was a need to chalk out an action plan to wage movement on the issue.
TTDP working president Revanth Reddy said the Nerella incident was sad one and the government’s attitude in this regard was deplorable. Not only in Nerella, were such incidents taking place everywhere in Telangana State. Faulting KTR’s remarks against the leaders visiting Nerella as ‘tourists’, Revanth Reddy dubbed him as ‘Desa Dimmari’. He also alleged that KTR has direct links with Sand mafia and said he has proof in this regard. He demanded dismissal of KTR from the cabinet and announce Rs 10 lakh ex gratia to each victim. He also stressed the need of joint action plan in this regard.
TPCC acting president Bhatti Vikramarka said the SP should have taken action against the victims if they burnt lorries as per law instead of applying third degree methods against them. He also found fault with KTR for saying that he didn’t know about the incident.
