BEIRUT/ TEL AVIV: Hezbollah fires 340 missiles and drones at Israel, wounding 11 people and causing “severe damage” in Tel Aviv, as its fighters put up fierce resistance against invading Israeli troops in southern Lebanon.
Israeli air attacks cause “massive destruction” in the Lebanese capital, according to local media, as Lebanon’s Education Ministry suspends schools in Beirut until January.
Israeli forces also carry out fresh attacks on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, a day after a raid that wounded the director of the besieged facility.
Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed at least 44,211 Palestinians and wounded 104,567 since October 7, 2023. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day with more than 200 taken captive.
In Lebanon, at least 3,754 people have been killed and 15,626 wounded in Israeli attacks since the war on Gaza began.
Dr Adnan Al-Bursh’s life sat in stark contrast to the manner of the charismatic 49-year-old’s death.
The head of orthopaedics at Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital was working at the al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza in December when he and other medics were arrested by the Israeli army for, they said, “national security reasons”.
Four months later, Ofer Prison guards dragged Al-Bursh and dumped him in the prison yard, naked from the waist down, bleeding and unable to stand, according to a statement provided by Israeli human rights organization HaMoked.
Recognizing him, some of the other prisoners carried Al-Bursh to a nearby room, and he died moments later.
Several media outlets in Israel and the US say the Israeli government has agreed in principle to a ceasefire in Lebanon.
The reports came as the Israeli cabinet met to discuss a truce on Sunday night.
Here’s what they are saying:
Israel’s Ynet News, citing Lebanese, Israeli and US sources, reported that Israel had agreed in principle to a settlement in Lebanon, possibly in part because Israeli officials feared that the US would withdraw as mediator.
US media outlet Axios reported that Israel and Hezbollah were “on the cusp” of a ceasefire deal in Lebanon and that US mediator Amos Hochstein had threatened to withdraw if Israel did not make progress within days. It cited two senior Israeli officials and two US officials.
Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, citing unnamed US and Israeli sources, reported that Israel had agreed “in principle” to “the outline” of a settlement but said that no final agreement had been reached.
While Israel’s Kan public broadcaster reported that several MPs, including from the governing coalition, were pressing Netanyahu not to reach a deal, as Hezbollah rocket barrages continued across Israel.
The Wafa news agency is reporting that Israel’s relentless bombardment of the Gaza Strip has killed more than 1,000 doctors and nurses.
The agency cited a statement by local medical sources.
“Over 310 other medical personnel were arrested, tortured, and executed in prisons”, the sources said, adding that the Israeli military has deliberately targeted hospitals and “prevented the entry of medical supplies, health delegations, and hundreds of surgeons into Gaza”.
Lebanon’s National News Agency said the deadly attack took place in Zibqin, a town in the Tyre district.
The latest attack came after Israeli forces launched several air attacks on the Tyre region amid fierce battles with Hezbollah fighters. (Al Jazeera)
