Hyderabad, October 5(PMI) Heavy rains lashed Hyderabad on Sunday, flooding major roads and residential colonies, and bringing city life to a standstill. The downpour, which began in the early hours, led to widespread waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions across several parts of the city.
Low-lying areas bore the brunt of the rains, with flooding reported from Khairatabad, Punjagutta, Yousufguda, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Borabanda, Ameerpet, S R Nagar, Himayatnagar, Narayanaguda, Bharatnagar, Begumpet, Rasoolpura, Marredpally, Bowenpally, Yapral, Vanasthalipuram, Madhapur, and other residential colonies.
Traffic came to a grinding halt on key routes, including L B Nagar, Dilsukhnagar, Abids, Lakdi-ka-pul, Punjagutta, Begumpet, Kukatpally, Nizampet, Miyapur, Hi-Tech City, Madhapur, Gachibowli, and Manikonda. The situation worsened as thousands of holidaymakers returned to the city after the Dussehra festivities, leading to hours-long traffic jams.
Commuters faced long delays as vehicles moved at a snail’s pace through waterlogged stretches. Traffic police and Hydraa teams were deployed across the city to regulate the movement of vehicles, while the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) sent teams to clear clogged drains and assist stranded residents.
Officials attributed the surge in traffic and congestion to the post-Dussehra return rush. Both civic and traffic departments said joint efforts were underway to manage the situation and ensure smoother flow on major corridors.
Rain Dampens Weekend Park Activities
The heavy downpour also disrupted weekend outdoor routines. Usually bustling with morning walkers and fitness enthusiasts, popular city parks such as KBR Park, Jalagam Vengalrao Park, Krishna Kanth Park, and KLN Yadav Park saw a sharp drop in visitors. The number of walkers, typically in the hundreds, remained confined to just a few dozen due to continuous rain.(pressmediaofindia.com)
