Hamas reviews new ceasefire proposal

16-04-2025

GAZA STRIP/ BEIRUT: Hamas is reviewing a new ceasefire proposal from Israel and will respond “as soon as possible” as the movement’s spokesperson Sami Abu Zuhri tells Al Jazeera that “the request to disarm Hamas is not acceptable to even hear”.

At least 17 Palestinians have been killed and 69 wounded in Israeli attacks across Gaza in the past 24 hours, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry.

The ministry says at least 51,000 Palestinians are confirmed dead and 116,343 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza.

The Government Media Office updated its death toll to more than 61,700, saying thousands of people missing under the rubble are presumed dead. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attacks and more than 200 were taken captive.

At least 71 civilians, including 14 women and nine children, have been killed by Israeli forces in Lebanon since a ceasefire came into effect in November, according to Thameen Al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

He said in a statement published on the UN website that “the violence must stop immediately” and called for “prompt, independent and impartial investigations into all allegations of serious violations of international humanitarian law”.

“Those found responsible must be held to account,” Al-Kheetan added.

Meanwhile, The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement has condemned an Israeli air attack on the northern gate of the Kuwaiti Field Hospital, in the al-Mawasi area of southern Gaza, which we earlier reported on.

“We strongly condemn the cowardly Zionist crime that targeted the back gate of the Kuwaiti Hospital, which resulted in the martyrdom of one of its medical personnel,” the group said.

“We denounce the incompetence and silence of international institutions and the international community’s complicity with the Zionist entity, which has encouraged it to continue targeting hospitals and medical personnel and perpetrate crimes of genocide.

“We emphasise the important role played by medical personnel, despite the limited resources, in operating hospitals and treating the wounded during the genocidal war against the Gaza Strip.”

The casualties of the attack were all patients and medics, the hospital’s spokesman Saber Mohammed said.

In short at least one medic has been killed and nine injured in an Israeli air strike on a field hospital in southern Gaza’s al-Mawasi area, according to the hospital spokesman.

Israeli forces have arrested 14 Palestinians across the occupied West Bank, including six in the Jerusalem governorate, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office. At least 350 Israeli writers, poets and editors have joined a growing number of people in Israel’s military and civil society calling on the government to put an end to the war in Gaza, said The Times of Israel newspaper.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says hundreds of patients are suffering in the enclave due to the Israeli blockade that prevents the entry of medical supplies and medication to the war-torn Palestinian territory.

The Israeli military has claimed that two weeks ago it killed Hamza Wael Muhammad Asfa, a Hamas fighter who participated in the release ceremony from Gaza of three Israeli captives in February. (Int’l News Desk)
