Hamas meet Egypt’s Spy Chief

26-11-2025

CAIRO/ GAZA STRIP: A senior delegation from Hamas has met Egypt’s intelligence chief in Cairo to discuss Israel’s breaches of the ceasefire agreement, the group said, as Palestinians in Gaza held funerals for dozens of people killed in recent Israeli attacks.

In a statement on Sunday, the group said it reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in its meeting with Hassan Rashad, but accused Israel of “continued violations” that it said threatened to “undermine the deal”.

Hamas, whose delegation included its exiled Gaza chief Khalil al-Hayya, called for a “clear and defined mechanism” under the supervision of mediators to document and halt any breaches of the deal.

Egypt, Qatar and the United States have been mediating between Hamas and Israel, securing the ceasefire that came into effect last month.

The Palestinian group said it also discussed with Egypt ways to urgently resolve the issue of Hamas fighters holed up in tunnel networks in Rafah in Israeli-controlled areas of Gaza.

It said communication with the fighters has been severed.

The meeting came a day after Israeli forces launched a wave of air attacks across Gaza, destroying homes, makeshift shelters and a car, killing at least 24 Palestinians, including children.

The Israeli military said it was targeting Hamas members after the group sent a fighter into Israeli-controlled Gaza territory to attack Israeli soldiers there. The military said a local Hamas commander was among those killed in the Saturday strikes.

Hamas has rejected the allegations, saying Israel was looking for an excuse to kill. The group on Saturday called on the mediators, Egypt, Qatar and the US to intervene urgently and exert pressure on Israel to “immediately halt these violations”.

An Israeli air strike on Beirut has killed Hezbollah’s top military commander, Haytham Ali Tabatabai, as well as four other people.

Senior Hezbollah official Mahmoud Qmati said Israel’s strike crossed a “red line” and that the group’s leadership was considering whether it would respond.

Funerals are being held in Gaza for Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks despite a ceasefire being in place.

A Hamas delegation has met Egyptian officials in Cairo to discuss developments related to the Gaza ceasefire agreement with Israel.

Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed at least 69,733 Palestinians and wounded 170,863 since October 2023. A total of 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks and about 200 were taken captive.

Meanwhile, Four Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire across Gaza this morning. A Palestinian man has been shot and wounded by Israeli settlers in an attack west of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. The shooting occurred in the central West Bank town of Beit Ur at-Tahta, where six Palestinians were wounded in a settler attack two days ago.

Iran has slammed Israel over the assassination of Hezbollah’s top military commander, Haytham Ali Tabatabai, a day after he was killed with four other people in a strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut. Israel says after Tabatabai’s killing that it has raised the alert level of its air defence system in the north.

The Israeli army has announced the dismissal of three generals and disciplinary actions against several other senior officers over their failure to prevent the October 7, 2023, attacks. (Int’l Monitoring Desk)
