Hamas fires fresh barrage of rockets at Israel

11-10-2023

JERUSALEM: Explosions have been heard in the Israeli city of Ashkelon after Hamas warned residents to evacuate by 5pm local time (3pm BST) on Tuesday.

Air raid sirens sounded in the coastal city and across the country as fierce fighting continued between Palestinian militants in Gaza and Israel’s military.

The Israel Defense Forces say more than 4,500 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel since Saturday, when Hamas launched its sudden, multi-pronged attack.

A military official said the death toll from the surprise attack over the weekend has now risen above 1,000.

Israel is pressing ahead with a fierce offensive of airstrikes in Gaza that has claimed 830 lives on the other side and caused widespread destruction.

Roads have been blocked by Israeli forces and the only traffic coming here is military vehicles.

There was an alert by the military saying there had been an infiltration of Palestinian fighters. We can’t confirm whether there was an infiltration or not. It shows the situation remains very fluid.

It’s calm now but the scenes here an hour ago you’d find difficult to believe great panic by the Israeli military. There was a lot of heavy machine gun fire that we could hear coming from about 4km (2.2 miles) away.

A journalist in southern Lebanon is reporting huge explosions on the hill tops near Naqoura city.

Amid intense bombardment at noon (9:00 GMT) on Monday, Israeli missiles landed on the Jabalia refugee camp just north of Gaza City, unleashing unimaginable trauma on those who live there.

Asmaa Tayeh, a young writer who lives in the camp, had grown accustomed to the sound of missiles in surrounding area since a surprise attack on Saturday prompted Israel to declare war on Hamas.

Saturday’s attack came 50 years and a day after Egyptian and Syrian forces launched an assault during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur in an effort to retrieve territory Israel had taken during a brief conflict in 1967. (Int’l News Desk)
