Hamas calls for global pressure on Israel

01-03-2025

GAZA STRIP/ JERUSALEM: Hamas has called on the international community to put pressure on Israel “to immediately enter the second phase of (the Gaza ceasefire agreement) without any delay or hesitation”.

Negotiations between Israel and Hamas on the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire have begun in Cairo, Egyptian officials say, before Saturday’s expiration of the truce’s first phase.

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said an Israeli delegation has travelled to Egypt to see whether there is enough “common ground” to negotiate an extension to the deal.

Gaza’s Health Ministry has confirmed 48,365 Palestinian deaths in Israel’s war on Gaza, while 111,780 people have been wounded. The Government Media Office updated its death toll to at least 61,709, saying thousands of Palestinians missing under the rubble are presumed dead. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks, and more than 200 were taken captive. Activists have shared scenes that showed smoke rising from several buildings in the camp, east of the Tulkarem governorate in northern occupied West Bank.

Palestinian media also reported that the Israeli forces have been blowing up and burning down homes in the camp.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians have left their homes in the northern West Bank since Israel began its operation in region last month.

Today, wide-scale Israeli raids across the occupied West Bank are ongoing. Here is what the Palestinian Wafa news agency has reported today:

Israeli forces have detained six Palestinians, including a woman, during multiple raids in the Hebron governorate.

Israeli forces closed two side roads in the city of Nablus, further restricting movement in the area. The Israeli raid on the city of Jenin and its refugee camp has now entered its 39th consecutive day. In total, it has resulted in 27 deaths, dozens of injuries, and extensive destruction of infrastructure and property.

The Israeli military raids on Tulkarem and its refugee camp have now entered the 33rd day, and the assault on Nur Shams camp has reached the 20th day.

At least 50 people were arrested in overnight raids, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs.

Israel must “better protect civilians and civilian infrastructure” in its military operations in the northern West Bank, according to the German Federal Foreign Office.

It called for the 40,000 people displaced by Israel’s “Iron Wall” operation to be “allowed back to their homes as soon as possible”.

“The Israeli government’s plans to deploy the Israeli army in the Jenin refugee camp on a long-term basis are unacceptable,” the ministry added.

Walid Habbas, a former Palestinian prisoner, says that since October 7, 2023, Palestinian life in the occupied territory has been not “far from what is happening in Gaza”.

“We have been witnessing a total siege on all the Palestinian localities inside the occupied West Bank,” he told media. “Israel deemed the West Bank another warzone, escalating all its military operations, especially in the north of the enclave,” Habbas, who is also a researcher at the Palestinian Forum for Israeli Studies, said.

The Palestinian group once again confirms its “full commitment” to the ceasefire with Israel. It said in a statement: “With the end of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement and prisoner exchange, Hamas confirms its full commitment to implementing all the clauses of the agreement in all its stages and details.” (Int’l News Desk)
