MELBOURNE: A year-long trial of e-scooters rolled out today in Melbourne streets and they are already proving popular among commuters.
The bright-colored scooters have sparked a buzz in the council areas of Port Phillip, Melbourne and Yarra, where the pilot program is being championed.
They run at speeds of up to 20km/h and mimick the scooters rolled out across the Darwin CBD.
Richard Hannah, the head of Neuron Mobility, one of the companies running the trial, said the scooters were equipped with “geofencing” technology which prevented people from riding to questionable locations.
“These e-scooters are packed full of safety features,” he said.
“They’re packed full of technology, they’re connected to a GPS.”
A total of 1500 scooters have been rolled out across the Melbourne council areas.
For the next month, they will be free each morning between 5am and 9am, normally they cost 45 cents a minute.
Riders are able to hire the scooters through the use of an app.
They must be at least 18, below the driving alcohol limit, and ride with the helmet included.
“It’ll complement the public transport system,” Hannah said.
“It will connect the inner city to the inner suburbs.”
