Hyderabad, Nov.23 (Shoukat-PMI)): City Traffic Police is continuing its drive against the drunk drivers to enhance the road safety.
- Viswa Prasad, IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police, said during the last three months from August 24 to November 21, some 13,933 motorists, who were driving the vehicles in a drunken state have been booked and 13,188 charge-sheets have been filed in various Courts and the same have been disposed of.
So far, during this year, 52,080 drunk drivers have been caught and brought to book. During the last three months, 824 drunk drivers have been sentenced to imprisonment from one to 10 days and 227 drunk drivers have been sentenced to do social service for two days. Further, 99 driving licences were also suspended for two to six months by the RTO based on the orders of Magistrates. The courts also imposed a fine of Rs 2,87,20,600/- on all the violators. During the special drive on November 9 against drunk driving, 327 drunk drivers were caught and cases were booked against them U/s 185 of M.V. Act. On a single day, 44 drunk drivers were sentenced and sent to jail on October 4, 2024 alone for a maximum period of four days and the minimum being two days.
633 motorists with Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) exceeding 200 mg./100 ml. of blood were caught which is well beyond the permissible limit of 30 mg/100ml. Of all the drunk drivers caught during the last three months, maximum caught were the two-wheeler drivers i.e. 11,904 (85 %). The drunk drivers were also counselled at the Traffic Training Institutes of Goshamahal and Begumpet in the presence of their family members. Drunk driving is an offence under section 185 of the M.V. Act with a punishment of fine up to Rs. 10,000/- and/or six months imprisonment. The driving licences of repeat violators will be suspended by the RTO for three months and above or permanently.
- Viswa Prasad, IPS, appealed to the motorists to not drive the vehicle in a drunken state, as it may lead to road accidents which may affect not only themselves but also other road users who are innocent. If you had alcoholic drinks, use public transport or cab or auto rickshaws or bike taxi to get home safely, he added. (PMI)
