Hyderabad, June 7(PMI) A deepfake video featuring AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has triggered alarm after it was circulated on social media to falsely promote an online investment scam. The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered a case following a formal complaint by Owaisi.
The AI-generated video misused Owaisi’s image and voice, along with clips of other public figures such as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, industrialist Mukesh Ambani, and Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, to make it appear as though they were endorsing a fraudulent investment scheme. The scam promised daily returns of ₹53,000, directing viewers to a fake website designed to deceive and defraud investors.
“This video was created and circulated with malicious intent to mislead the public and damage my reputation,” Owaisi stated in his complaint. “It falsely presents me as promoting a scam to lure innocent people.”
Following the complaint, the Cyber Crime Police Station registered an FIR on June 5 under relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Authorities have launched an investigation and are working with social media platforms to take down the video and identify the culprits.
A senior police official confirmed that the matter is being treated with urgency, noting the increasing threat posed by AI-driven misinformation.(pressmediaofindia.com)
