Hyderabad, November 8 (Crime Bureau-PMI): A businessman facing severe financial distress resorted to chain snatching to clear his mounting debts. The Chikkadpally police on Saturday arrested Gudipati Bramaiah and his wife in connection with the case.
According to police, Bramaiah, a resident of Borabanda, suffered heavy losses in his business and had taken multiple loans, including for his daughter’s marriage. Struggling to repay them, he decided to turn to chain snatching as a quick means to overcome his financial troubles.
Investigators said Bramaiah learned the methods of chain snatching by watching YouTube videos and crime-related news. He conducted recce in the Yousufguda and Borabanda areas before committing the crime.
On October 31, Bramaiah boarded the metro from Erragada to Narayanaguda, attempting two snatchings in the Sultan Bazar area but failing due to large crowds. Later, he followed a woman to her residence and, while she waited for the elevator, threatened and snatched her gold chain before fleeing.
After returning home, he handed over the stolen chains to his wife and asked her to mortgage them. On November 1, the couple visited a Manappuram Finance branch in Kukatpally, where they mortgaged one chain for ₹1.13 lakh, using the money to pay off part of their debts.
Police apprehended Bramaiah near Sahara Bakery, Ashok Nagar, recovering a broken gold chain with pearls weighing 4.6 grams and another mortgaged chain weighing 14.354 grams. His wife was also taken into custody later.
