Hyderabad, May 1 (PMI): Welcoming the Union government’s decision to incorporate a caste census in the forthcoming national census, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy proposed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi set a timeline for the completion of the census.
During a press conference at his residence on Thursday, the Chief Minister also recommended that the Centre engage in discussions with all political parties regarding the policies that should guide the caste census. He suggested forming a committee of Central Ministers as well as an expert committee of officials for this purpose.
“Before initiating the census process, the Union government should clearly outline the terms and references and make them publicly accessible. Additionally, it is crucial to consult with all political parties to gather their input. In order to conduct the census effectively, contributions from all stakeholders, including civil societies and intellectuals, should also be considered,” Revanth Reddy stated.
The Chief Minister remarked that Telangana is leading the way among other states and serves as a model for the nation in implementing the caste census. He mentioned that the state government is eager to share its experiences with the central government and provide recommendations for effective execution of the caste census.
In response to remarks from Telangana’s BJP leaders, who have criticised the caste census initiative by the Telangana government, Revanth Reddy questioned why BJP-led states have not carried out a caste census during their decade in power.
He accused the BJP leaders of attacking the Telangana government for political advantage, driven by jealousy and frustration. The Chief Minister pointed out that these leaders are concerned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is adopting policies similar to his own.
“Until recently, BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were against the call for a caste census. However, facing political pressure and no other alternatives, the BJP-led government at the Centre has now opted to carry out a caste census,” Revanth Reddy added.
Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, MPs, MLAs and Congress senior leaders were also present in the press conference. (PMI)
