Civilians killed as Israel attacks Gaza tents, bombs hospital

19-12-2024

GAZA STRIP: Israel is keeping up its attacks across the Gaza Strip, including against Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza resulting in its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) being out of service.

In central and southern Gaza, tents in what were supposed to be safe zones came under fire that killed several people.

Hamas says a ceasefire deal is possible if Israel stops setting new conditions, while the Israeli defence minister insists that his country “will control security in Gaza with full freedom to act” after the war ends.

The UN’s humanitarian agency says Israeli authorities are still “overwhelmingly” denying aid missions to North Gaza, including three aid convoys carrying food and water that were turned back on Tuesday.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 45,059 Palestinians and wounded 107,041 since October 7, 2023. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day, and more than 200 were taken captive.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says an international medical team urgently needed at Kamal Adwan Hospital has not been allowed to deploy as Israel continues its siege in northern Gaza.

Hanan Balkhy, WHO regional director for the Eastern Mediterranean, also condemned the repeated attacks on the medical facility. “The fear endured by the hospital’s staff and patients in recent days is indescribable and unacceptable,” she wrote on X.

The representative for the UN health agency said the hospital was without surgical or maternal care capacity.

WHO was instead able to deliver supplies to al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, Balkhy said. The Israeli military operations in the north of Gaza that have been continuing for more than two months have killed more than 2,500 Palestinians, with at least 10,000 others wounded.

In the central and southern parts of the Strip, areas that are hosting hundreds of thousands of families have come under relentless attacks. These attacks have been concentrated on targeting residential buildings. In the past 12 hours, two makeshift tent areas were targeted we have reports from medical sources confirming that three civilians were killed.

If we just look at the reality on the ground, we can see that there is no sign of the Israeli military operations on the ground abating. There is a very constant, visible presence of Israeli quadcopter drones and fighter jets and in the north, we have been told by citizens that the situation there is apocalyptic and it has become unbearable. Families who are right now trapped in the city of Beit Lahiya have run out of options. They have run out of means of survival. Doctors in barely functional hospitals are working under the combined pressure of shortages of medical supplies, an increase of air strikes and high rates of casualties.

A woman from Gaza is among 15 Palestinians arrested by Israeli forces across the West Bank, according to prisoners’ groups quoted by the Wafa news agency.

The Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs and the Prisoner’s Society said that the woman from Gaza was in the West Bank for medical treatment, according to Wafa.

The report said the arrests were made in the governorates of Hebron, Jericho, Tulkarem, Ramallah, Qalqilya and Jerusalem.

Eid Sabbah, the director of nursing at Kamal Adwan Hospital, described a night “full of horror” at the facility in northern Gaza, as Israeli bulldozers advanced and quadcopter drones fired at the medical compound and surrounding buildings. (Int’l News Desk)
