Child’s fall exposes lapses in safety, lack of coordination among GHMC, HMWSSB, Hydraa
Hyderabad, Sept. 12(PMI): The fall of a five-year-old girl into an open manhole in Yakutpura on Thursday has once again exposed glaring gaps in Hyderabad’s civic safety system. The incident triggered public outrage, with three key departments — GHMC, HMWSSB, and Hydraa — engaged in a blame game instead of accepting responsibility.
Residents of the Old City expressed anger over the negligence, demanding stricter safety measures and accountability. The overlapping roles of Hydraa with GHMC and HMWSSB further deepened the confusion, leading to delays in fixing urgent civic issues during heavy rains.
HMWSSB Deputy General Manager (Chanchalguda) D. Sandeep Kumar clarified that his department had cleaned and covered seven GHMC manholes in the area based on a corporator’s complaint, but “the manhole where the girl fell was not cleaned by our teams.”
On the other hand, GHMC (Charminar) Deputy Commissioner M. Mangathayaru, who visited the spot, pointed to Hydraa’s Monsoon Emergency Teams. “They desilted the GHMC manhole but failed to place the cover properly. This negligence caused the mishap,” she said.
The tragedy has reignited demands for a unified civic authority and stricter monitoring of manhole maintenance to prevent such recurring incidents.(pressmediaofindia.com)
