Kolkata-Dec 05 (PMI NEWS) The Calcutta High Court on Friday refused to intervene in a matter related to the proposed foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Babri Mosque in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. A bench headed by the Acting Chief Justice said that maintaining law and order is the responsibility of the state government. The court was hearing a plea seeking a ban on the event announced by suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir.
The state government informed the court that adequate security forces had been deployed to maintain peace, while the central government stated that 19 companies of central forces had also been stationed in the area.
Welcoming the High Court’s decision, Humayun Kabir described it as a “befitting reply” to the petitioners. Speaking to a Media person, he said, “I am very happy with the High Court’s decision. I thank the judge. This is my constitutional right. Those who approached the High Court have received an appropriate response.”
Kabir had sparked controversy after announcing the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Babri Mosque in Murshidabad and claiming that several Muslim leaders would attend the event. He had stated that the ceremony would take place on December 6 in Beldanga and that construction would take three years.
Earlier on Thursday, Kabir also intensified his attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claiming that she would no longer remain in power after the 2026 Assembly elections. In a sharp statement to reporters, he said that she would be referred to as the “former Chief Minister” after 2026.
These remarks came just hours after he was suspended by the Trinamool Congress following the controversy. Kabir also announced that he would resign from the party and may launch his own political party on December 22.(pressmediaofindia.com)
