Hyderabad Jan 18 (PMI) The Telangana State Cabinet has decided to conduct elections at the earliest for 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations whose council terms have already expired.
A special commission constituted for the purpose submitted its report, following which reservations were finalised. Taking into account upcoming religious events such as Mahasivaratri on February 15 and Ramzan on February 16, as well as the annual examinations, the Cabinet resolved to hold the municipal elections soon, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said on Sunday.
The decision was taken during the 27th meeting of the State Cabinet held at Medaram. Addressing a press conference later, the Minister said the Cabinet also discussed the proposed takeover of Hyderabad Metro Rail from L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad. Officials have been asked to circulate detailed files on the issue for further discussion at the next Cabinet meeting.
The Cabinet approved land acquisition for Metro Phase II (A and B) at an estimated cost of ₹2,787 crore. It also gave the green signal for the construction of a nine-kilometre flyover from the ICCC area in Hyderabad to Shilpa Layout Road, aimed at easing traffic congestion.
The Minister further announced that Godavari Pushkaralu will be held from July 27 to August 3, 2027. As part of the preparations, historic temples along the Godavari river stretch from Basara to Bhadrachalam will be developed, and an ecotourism circuit will be created.
A consultant has been appointed to study long-term development measures for the Pushkaralu, while a Cabinet sub-committee will oversee the execution of works. A final decision on the proposals is expected by March 31. Additionally, the Cabinet approved land allocation for central and State sector units at 14 locations across Telangana.
