Hyderabad Feb 14 (PMI) The political equations in Nizamabad have taken a decisive turn following the latest Municipal Corporation elections, resulting in a hung council and fresh negotiations among major parties.
Out of 60 divisions, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats. The Indian National Congress secured 17 seats, while the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won 14 seats. With no party reaching the required majority mark, the corporation stands in a hung position.
Despite earlier speculation that the BJP might stake a claim to the mayor’s post, MP Dharmapuri Aravind clarified that the party would sit in the opposition. “We did not gain a majority in Nizamabad. We will be in opposition,” he stated. He further remarked that the BJP’s broader objective is to rename Nizamabad as Indore before the end of the mayor’s term. Addressing the Armoor results, he added that the party would review the outcome and apologise to the people of Armoor.
Meanwhile, the Congress has intensified efforts to secure the mayoralty. Telangana PCC Chief Mahesh Kumar Goud has reportedly reached out to AIMIM seeking support to form the leadership in the civic body. Among the ex officio members are MLA Bhupathi Reddy and Mahesh Kumar Goud, whose votes could play a crucial role in determining the final outcome.
With political negotiations underway, the focus now shifts to alliance-building and strategic manoeuvring that will decide who ultimately occupies the mayor’s chair in Nizamabad Municipal Corporation. (pressmediaofindia.com)
